coolest fruit ninja but in VR
I took an intro to VR class just for fun in school. Turns out, Unity is awesome! My instructors made the class super exciting, teaching us all the cool things about the tool. I got so hooked that I started tinkering with Unity outside of class and explored more about VR. My enthusiasm didn’t go unnoticed—my instructors offered me a research gig over the summer, which mostly involved making VR games! The research project was all about using VR to figure out which visual features are essential for our perception. In real life, we see everything, but in VR, we can limit what people see and still see if they can do real-world tasks. It might sound a bit nerdy, but here are some of the games I created and had an absolute blast working on!
Before developing for VR, you obviously had to learn unity 3D. I had a lot of fun with the tool, and a lot of my learning was by myself, outside of class. Now this was the time when ChatGPT was getting really popular, and man, it's such a great learning tool. I fiddled with different prompts to create different quirky scenes. My professor liked my mini projects so much that he offered me a teaching assistant position in his Intro to VR class and allowed me to create a new set of learning assignments myself that could teach the students how to use the tool, using ChatGPT. Here are some of the projects that I had fun making.
My friends and I started a step-tracking challenge to keep each other accountable, but tracking everything manually got old fast. So, I decided to take matters into my own hands and coded a fitness tracking app using Replit’s AI assistant. The app lets us log our steps, track progress, and compete on a fun leaderboard. It wasn’t always smooth sailing, but figuring out how to turn a simple idea into something that made our challenge easier (and more fun) was totally worth it. A little sweat, a lot of code, and here we are! Read more about this project here!
For my niece’s birthday, I ditched the usual gift ideas and created something special—a 3D game in Unity just for her! Think of it as a kids’ version of Temple Run, where a chicken races through a farm, collecting eggs, jumping over barn fences, and dodging obstacles to stay alive. The goal? Rack up as many points as possible while having a blast! She loved it so much that three years later, she’s still playing it. It’s proof that a little creativity and coding can make a gift truly unforgettable!
Back in school, my friends got into doing the 100 Days of UI challenge. Around that time, I got curious about virtual reality and started tinkering with VR environments. As I was learning and designing, it hit me that VR interfaces needed a lot of love and improvement. Then Apple released the Vision Pro, and lots of companies released design guidelines for VR. I wanted to dive in and practice, but there wasn't a '100 Days of UI Challenge' for VR. So, what did I do? I turned to ChatGPT and had it whip up a custom UI challenge for VR environments. I designed based on those prompts, and it was super fun!
